Decom North Sea, industry body for the North Sea Oil and Gas decommissioning industry, has today (Wednesday, 9 September) received ECITB approval of its Decommissioning – from Planning through to Execution course.

Chris Claydon, chief executive of the ECITB presented Karen Seath, Interim chief executive officer of Decom North Sea with the ECITB’s Approved Training Provider plaque at Offshore Europe 2015, the leading event in the offshore calendar.

Commenting on the achievement, Chris Claydon said:

“We are delighted to welcome Decom North Sea to our network of approved providers. This cements further our relationship in working together to develop new industry-wide solutions that meet the long term skills needs of the offshore industry.”

Karen Seath said:

“ECITB approval of Decom North Sea’s trailblazing course, Decommissioning – from Planning through to Execution, sends out a powerful message to the offshore industry, regarding the potential of decommissioning.

“It is a growth area and our relationship with ECITB is highly significant for future skills development. We have here the potential to pioneer new industry standards and extend the range of approved training courses and providers available to members.”

Decommissioning is a challenge for the oil and gas industry and collaboration is the key to achieving essential cost efficiencies. The ECITB Approved “Introduction to Decommissioning from Planning through to Execution” training course, developed by Strategic Decom and Decom North Sea, provides the opportunity to increase knowledge of this growth sector from a team of experts with first-hand experience of decommissioning projects. Sharing lessons learned and exploring how decommissioning can be undertaken more efficiently, the next course runs in Aberdeen from 7th – 8th October.

This is the second in a number of strands of activity that the two organisations are working on together in addition to the Skills Charter. One area of focus is the development of decommissioning job role profiles within the proven framework of the ECITB’s Career Progression Route Map. The first role under development is Decommissioning Engineering Manager. Another key project is collaboration on the development of an Offshore Decommissioning Skills Development Plan, currently in a planning stage.

Earlier this year Decom North Sea signed up to the ECITB’s Skills Charter. The ECITB Skills Charter provides public recognition of commitment to skills development to ensure the long term competence of the workforce. The signing of the Charter signalled the start of a new partnership approach between the two organisations for collaboration across a range of areas that will benefit the decommissioning industry, the many shared member companies of the two organisations and help ensure the transferability of a competent workforce across different phases of the oil and gas industry.

DNS is committed to a collaborative skills agenda and ECITB member companies are also increasingly involved with decommissioning. The ECITB is keen to leverage its longstanding experience in the offshore industry to support decommissioning for its members through skills collaboration with DNS.
