The annual Offshore Decommissioning Conference, which is jointly organised by Decom North Sea and Oil & Gas UK, has announced this year’s keynote speaker as Deirdre Michie, Chief Executive of Oil & Gas UK

Entitled “Taking the Initiative”, the conference will take place 17 - 19 November at Fairmont, St Andrews. Previously described as “the best gathering in the UK of active Decommissioning people”, the conference aims to take forward the discussion around decommissioning, with a focus on engaging real solutions, right now.

The move into this next phase comes at a time when decommissioning costs are forecast to potentially rise over the next 35 years, reaching beyond a predicted £50 billion (2014 prices). Speaking in this context, Deirdre will set the scene for a conference packed with insight and current thinking from a line-up of experts who represent operators, the service sector and a range of industry and government bodies.

The influence of this conference is far reaching, consistently welcoming delegates from across the UK, Norway, The Netherlands, Brazil and the USA. This year, they will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of colleagues and topics, which will include an analysis of the current market, future opportunities and lessons learned from recent major projects. Delegates will also hear from other key industries with experience pertinent to the sector, including nuclear, retail and automotive.

Decom North Sea’s Chairman, Callum Falconer is delighted to herald the announcement of this year’s conference. Referencing the value of the event to the decommissioning sector, he said: “With each passing month, the strategic value of decommissioning in the North Sea continues to be highlighted.

“Despite the challenging times within the North Sea oil and gas industry, decommissioning is a developing sector that is full of opportunity. The time has come to take the discussion into the next phase and begin to see the tangible results of that discussion.”

Oil & Gas UK chief executive Deirdre Michie added: "Industry is committed to maximising recovery from the North Sea but when the time is right, it needs to plan carefully for decommissioning. These are tough times for the sector and now more than ever before, there is a real need for activities to be as efficient as possible – whether that be in exploring for oil or deciding an asset has reached the end of its life. The Offshore Decommissioning Conference will provide a platform to share the latest thinking about this important part of the industry’s lifecycle.

History dictates that the Offshore Decommissioning Conference 2015 will be a sell-out, with over 300 delegates attending. For further information and to register for a place on this conference, please visit
