The Society for Underwater Technology, The Hydrographic Society in Scotland and The International Marine Contractors Association are holding our popular annual joint seminar on 5th November 2020 in Aberdeen and online.

The world is changing at a rapid pace, energy needs are increasing in parallel with a renewed focus on sustainable operations. The global market of 2020 has so far proven that all industries require the ability to adapt to fluctuating conditions. Technology developments continue to advance to improve all aspects of offshore operations. This brings the possibility to explore further and deeper with longer tiebacks and remote wells. Technology provides efficiency improvements for day-to-day operations, enhancing the sustainability of the offshore energy industry.

 As energy demand increase, the transition to non-hydrocarbon sources of energy requires a shift in technology focus. An established renewables energy industry now allows lessons learned to be shared both ways between hydrocarbon and renewables industries. Sustainability considerations applicable to all forms of energy production can include:

  • Circular economy
  • GHG Emissions
  • Remote operations
  • Reconditioned assets
  • Workforce
  • Marginal fields
  • Alternative energy
  • Electrification
  • Profitability

This seminar aims to consider technology developments which may be applied to improve the sustainability of energy? How can the knowledge base of the oil & gas industry support an energy transition, and how can the renewables industry feed knowledge back to improve the efficiency of oil & gas operations?

Abstracts are now being accepted for consideration, which will be of interest to members of all three organisations. These should be approx. 150 words and be for a 20-minute presentation. The seminar is aiming to challenge and educate attendees on the possible outcome of the subsea industry over the next two decades. Abstracts should be submitted covering any of the above listed considerations for sustainability, which may be applicable to any aspect of subsea operations such as: -

  • Inspection, Repair, Monitoring & Maintenance/ Operations & Maintenance;
  • Survey;
  • Construction;
  • Environment & Ocean Science;
  • Decommissioning;
  • Please note: abstracts from other discipline groups/ sectors will be considered.

Abstracts should be submitted to by 15th July 2020

All submissions will be acknowledged, and speakers advised by end August 2020 if their abstract has been accepted. Note: Sponsorship opportunities also exist with space for pop up booths. For more information contact
